I am Lauren Keir, proud daughter of N’awlins living the suburbs of the nation's capital. I launched my wellness company earlier this year (2018) as the result of a health challenge which was a brief moment in time, yet life changing. When this journey began, I was 5’4”, 219 lbs. I was extremely obese for my height (to say the least). My inaugural blog will take you through a 3-year chronicle of my wellness journey. My journey spanned from October 2015 to May 2018.
In October 2015, I was headed to a professional development workshop when I experienced a ball of fire which started at the top of my head and zig-zagged to the bottom of my feet. With my face numb and body hot, I thought I’d had a stroke or something close to it. I ended up in the emergency room. Once at the ER, I quickly discovered my blood pressure was 180/100 and it indeed was not a stroke. The team offered me blood pressure meds, but I refused. About 2-3 weeks later, I went to work and fell ill upon entering the building. Face numb, dizzy, right side numb and vision blurred. Same symptoms as before. I ended up in the ER again. This time my blood pressure was 160/100. Along with the standard tests they asked me to walk a straight line (like a drunk), but never performed an MRI. After about 45-60 minutes, the team determined that I’d had a T.I.A. and prehypertension to go along with my pre-existing asthma. They gave me some strong random hypertension medication and sent me home (high as a kite). The team recommended that I follow-up with my p.c.p and schedule an appointment with my primary care physician, a cardiologist and a neurologist. Little did I know, it was going to be a roller coaster ride…
Starting November 2015, I saw the following doctors/specialists over the course of 16 months (Nov 2015-April 2017):
In May 2017, I had had IT and scheduled an appointment with my old/new functional medicine doctor for the next day at 2pm. I knew if anyone could solve my problem, she could! She ordered a comprehensive workup (from the roota to the toota), designed a new lifestyle plan to move forward and scheduled my next appointment. Three (3) weeks later I returned. We reviewed my comprehensive results and boom it was Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis! This is where the REAL work began. I took copious notes as she spelled out my new lifestyle: supplements, food and medical spa. I was managing this new lifestyle fairly well and going to work regularly until Fall 2017 hit. I became extremely fatigued, my TSH levels increased and I went out on FMLA. About 30 days into FMLA, we discovered the root cause. After 12 weeks of clean eating, supplements and detox, I was feeling much better. I returned to work at the healthy weight of 129 lbs. I slowly became acclimated to the workplace again. I continue to follow my lifestyle plan….I maintain my monthly appointments with my functional medicine doctor. As of May 2018, my Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis was 3 points from going into remission.
As a result of my Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, I started Lauren Keir Wellness. Through my own journey, I have learned a lot about food, ingredients, safer products and their effects on the gut. I have also gained knowledge about autoimmune diseases, inflammation and estrogen dominance. It’s a lifestyle!... It’s a Metamorphosis!
